Explicit worked value

How many board feet are in a 2×4×8?

Using 2 inches × 4 inches × 8 feet as the entered dimensions gives 5.333 board feet. A finished board measured smaller will produce a different result.

Calculation from the stated numbers

The imperial formula is thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet ÷ 12. For 2 × 4 × 8, the result is 64 ÷ 12, or 5.333 board feet when displayed to three decimals.

Why a measured board may differ

The trade label 2×4 does not always equal a measured 2 inches by 4 inches. If the quote is based on finished dimensions, enter those measurements and select Actual or Supplier rather than relying on the nominal example.
